Vegan MoFo Questionnaire

Liz from Food Snobbery is my Hobbery posted a lovely little survey the other day, so of course I just HAD to fill it out!

1. Favorite non-dairy milk?
ONLY So Nice Unsweetened. Nothing else compares. :) Although, Almond Breeze is might fine too..

2. What are the top 3 dishes/recipes you are planning to cook?
Pita bread, Ratatouille, and Baba Ganoush

3. Topping of choice for popcorn?
Chili powder, but I'm not a big popcorn eater

4. Most disastrous recipe/meal failure?
Aha, once the cap to my jar of cumin seeds fell off, and cumin seeds poured into the frying pan, but it was too late because I'd accidently put them in after all the vegetables instead of before... It tasted pretty gross!

5. Favorite pickled item?
Pickled ginger :)

6. How do you organize your recipes?
...I don't. :S

7. Compost, trash, or garbage disposal?
Compost, ideally, otherwise the trash.

8. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 foods...what would they be (don't worry about how you'll cook them)?
Oatmeal, lentil soup, and eggplant

9. Fondest food memory from your childhood?
I'm only 15, so there are so many fond ones that I can still remember... When my siblings and I were little, my dad used to do this thing we called 'bread & honey'. We would sit on his lap, one at a time, and my dad would take a tiny piece of bread, spread on some butter, squeeze on some honey, and put it in our mouth... Totally not vegan!

10. Favorite vegan ice cream?
Hmm, I like making my own sorbets with just frozen raspberries and bananas, that's all. :)

11. Most loved kitchen appliance?
My Magic Bullet, I suppose. What a handy dandy little blender.

12. Spice/herb you would die without?
CINNAMON!!!!

13. Cookbook you have owned for the longest time?
Personally, my oldest cookbook would be this one called 'Easy Vegetarian'. A large part of it is very un-vegan friendly, but there are a few gems!

14. Favorite flavor of jam/jelly?
I don't like jam, but the smell of raspberry jam is absolutely wonderful.

15. Favorite vegan recipe to serve to an omni friend?
Dreena's homestyle chocolate chip cookies! Or the Vive le Vegan Fudgy Brownies. :D

16. Seitan, tofu, or tempeh?
Seitan

17. Favorite meal to cook (or time of day to cook)?
Lunch

18. What is sitting on top of your refrigerator?
Nothing...

19. Name 3 items in your freezer without looking.
Flax seeds, leftover lentils, and gingerroot

20. What's on your grocery list?
Nutritional yeast! Planet organic was all out last time. :( We're running low on soymilk, too.

21. Favorite grocery store?
Either Planet Organic or Roots Organic Market, or that one health food store I loved in Kihei...

22. Name a recipe you'd love to veganize, but haven't yet.
There are three: Rocky road brownies, pavlova, and my mom's Ski Cake

23. Food blog you read the most (besides Isa's because I know you check it everyday). Or maybe the top 3?
Oh, that's a toughie!
-Where's the revolution?
-Yeah, that "Vegan" shit!
-Have cake, will travel

24. Favorite vegan candy/chocolate?
Fruit is my candy!

25. Most extravagant food item purchased lately?
Oh, I don't know... Goji berries, perhaps?

26. Make up your own question to put here (and answer it).
If it were possible to live off of one food and still be perfectly healthy, what would you eat for the rest of your life?
Persimmons! What an amazingly delicious fruit! :)

Hey Peggy sorry for the late comment! I know of a liquid gold dressing recipe in Becoming Vegan, but it requires flax oil.

If I had flax oil I'duse it when I got the chance! Flax oil is really really expensive here! Maybe it's cheaper in LA?

Oh I've seen Annie's Goddess Dressing, the dressing every vegan's crazy about. It's pretty calorie laden, but supposedly very yummy. Fatfree vegan has a recipe for a lite version! I can put as much tahini as I want(:

Okay I'll become my nanny's apprentice and learn how to chop up veggies! What are your favourite veggies to eat raw? (I like alfalfa sprouts, a little costly here, but very yummy when stir fried. haven't tried it raw...)

Oh goji berries are expensive? They're dirt cheap in Singapore! We use em all the time in chinese soups. (Singapore is about 70% chinese and the rest are malays, indians, and loads of foreign talent!)

I'd rather trade ten sacks of goji berries for a bottle of flax oil though..

I'm a sucker for questionnaires, so you bet I'll be doing this one in the near future. :)
Btw, Planet O has been out of nut. yeast every time I've been there in the past few months.... Coincidence??

You can eat cabbage raw?? I never knew...I think sprouts would be nice, I love carrots and tomatoes too! And romaine lettuce.

I'm not sure how brocolli would taste like raw, but I have no idea how to chop it up anyway.

The best part of a salad is...the dressing!

You motivate me(: I love seitan, but tofu is more convenient for me. I'm kinda afraid of making my own anyway(: I'm flying off! In about 14 and a half hours!

Thanks for visiting my blog :o).

I'm amazed that you don't like pasta... but at least you seem to really like vegan baked goods. Did you like the brownies from Vive le Vegan?

Yay, persimmons! I haven't had any this year yet!
Oooh, and yay So Nice! I buy that very often, mainly because I love the bilingual Canadian label- hee hee.

ooooh, and bread, butter, and honey is one of my favorite childhood food memories too- fortunately, EB and agave do the job really well!

Now you've got me craving baba ganouj...and ratatouille... anything eggplant!

Hi Peggy! Am in LA, I found Earth Balance, Soy Delicious but I can't find soy yoghurt anywhere! Any suggestions? There wasn't any in Trader Joe's.

And it's so sad I can't take any Earth balance or Soy Delicious or soy yoghurt all the way back to Singapore...I'm not sure if they'll survive 20 hours even in a chiller bag.

I only drink So Nice unsweetened, too!

Cool site you have here, thanks for all the vegan tips.

I decided, I'll go ahead and try to bring all those goodies back anyway. In a chiller box. or bag.

I'm still on the lookout for TVP and liquid smoke. Do any vegans here know where to go to get these cheap and in large quantities? I'm somewhere around Huntington Beach.

Help I need advice...we were having fried kway teow(rice noodles) for dinner, and I had mine cooked first so I told my aunt to throw in tofu, green veg, beansprouts, and nothing more. I was really happy cause my aunts and uncle let me have it, but my mom came by and she got really mad. She grabbed some fish soup and tried to make me eat it but I decided to stand up for once and said no again and again. Now I think my mom's so mad she's gonna cry...

Suddenly standing up for me doesn't seem right anymore...I can't let my mom get so mad everytime I make a stand...at least we were at peace yesterday and before when I gave in cause I was afraid.

Thanks Peggy, my mom was roasting chicken for dinner just now and I was looking for any possible vegan alternatives anyone has kindly prepared. Noppe. Then I saw a bowl of raw fish with seasoning about to bake. I knew that must be my mom's plan for me.

Then my aunt came home and she knew I wouldn't eat chicken or fish so she attempted making tofu patties for me. Everything was okay till she whipped out fish paste. I tried to make her use cornstarch instead but she just got exasperated and asked me what's wrong with fish. And dumped it in. (she has this idea I don't want to eat meat cause I'm on some freak diet)

So I didn't watch anymore and gave up hope and ran upstairs crying. Andtwenty minutes later my mom came in and asked what's wrong. (she didn't know) She figured after ten minutes of prodding. And she got frustrated and told me she doesn't agree with what I'm doing and walked out.

During dinner I ate my potato, brocolli but glared at the fish. I guess my mom was too mad at me to care. when everyone started clearing out the kitchen I asked my other aunt if I could microwave the veggie bbq riblets I happened to buy at Target today. (really expensive in Singapore!) I got my ribs.

How long is this battle gonna go on? I feel like my mom is on the verge of giving up on me, almost like she's abandoning me. And my siblings hate me for what I do. They taunt me and humiliate me right in front of everyone.

I think I may have to post this in my own blog sometime soon :)
